Christian Waldschmidit was a German Pietist refugee. In 1796 he moved to present day Camp Dennison from Morristown Pennsylvania and founded "New Germany". He was a miller by trade and began his industry on the property along the Little Miami River.
Waldschimdit's large party arrived in flat-bottom-boats in July of that year. He soon build a mill and his holdings soon exploded. From this modest beginning he added a blacksmith shop, shoe shop, a saw mill and a distillery. The entire site for Camp Dennison was part of what once was the 160 acre Nimrod Price farm. He also created the Waldschmidit Cemetery and founded and ministered the first church in the area.
The land between the railroad and the river was laid out by Elijah Campbell around the time of the Civil War and later additions were made by Hermann and Browneyes. William Beard, and by Nimrod Price himself.
Today Camp Dennison is in Symmes Township but before 1825 it was part of Sycamore Township. Symmes was formed from the east side of other townships and Camp Dennison fell into the newly created township of Symmes.
When the Civil War broke out "New Germany" was renamed Camp Dennison after the current Governor of Ohio. and extended from the river to the hills and from the Miamiville bridge to the south line of the town. The camp was laid out with uniform streets an alleys, residential squares for the army parade and assembly and drill grounds. It had it's own water distribution system coming from a reservoir atop a hill on the south side of the area. By 1880 the population had grown to 292.
After the Civil War Camp Dennison retained the name and began to grow. In 1869 it had the G.A Simpson's general store, William Beard's blacksmith shop, W.B. Knicely plasterer, S.S. Veesburg carpenter, and a small railroad depot with W.H. Queal the station agent. Some of the residents today are decedents from soldiers of the Civil War camp. The residents once tried to change the name to Grand Valley but because the railroad refused to accept that it eventually changed back to Camp Dennison and has remained the same since.
In the 1890's Camp had two stores, a Methodist church, a school, the post office, a population of about 300 and was considered a promising town in Symmes Township.
Camp Dennison today has three buildings that were present during the Civil War and a number of homes constructed from the lumber of the disbanded army camp. A number of other buildings were built during or post war including; the Knicely General store, the Schoolhouse (Currently the Schoolhouse Restaurant). We are still a part of Symmes Township but do to annexations no longer geographically connect to the main part of Symmes. The 2010 census has our population at 375 (160 male and 215 female). We are a economic, ethnic, and racial diverse community with many multi-generational families still residing here.
